Fiona Apple is an American singer-songwriter. From 1996 to 2020, she has released five albums which have all reached the top 20 on the U.S. Billboard 200 chart. She is the recipient of many accolades, including three Grammy Awards, two MTV Video Music Awards, and a Billboard Music Award.
The youngest daughter of the actor Brandon Maggart, she grew up alternating between her mother’s home in New York and her father’s in Los Angeles. As a child, she trained on piano and began composing her own songs at age eight.
Career
She released her debut album, Tidal, at age 17 in 1996 and received a Grammy Award for Best Female Vocal Rock Performance for the single Criminal. She followed with When the Pawn… (1999), which Jon Brion produced. It received critical and commercial success and is Platinum-certified.
Fiona Apple again collaborated with Brion for her third album, Extraordinary Machine (2005), and began recording the album in 2002. However, Apple was reportedly unhappy with the production and decided not to release the record, leading fans to protest Epic Records.
She eventually reproduced the album without Brion and released it in October 2005. The album earned Gold and a nomination for a Grammy Award for Best Pop Vocal Album. In 2012, she released her fourth studio album, The Idler Wheel…, which received critical praise and received a nomination for the Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album in 2013.
Fiona Apple released her fifth studio album, Fetch the Bolt Cutters in 2020 to widespread acclaim. The album earned two Grammy Awards: Best Alternative Music Album and Best Rock Performance for the lead single “Shameika”.
When the Pawn, which Jon Brion produced, used more expressive lyrics, experimented more with drum loops. The album received a positive reception from publications, including Rolling Stone. It did not fare as well commercially as her debut, though RIAA- certified the album Platinum and sold one million copies in the U.S.
